Market action
Asian equity markets declined on concerns that a tightening in lending was underway in China, threatening the economic recovery. China led on the way down, with the Shanghai Composite plunging 6.7%. Looking at the rest of Asia, the Nikkei dropped 0.4%, or -42 points, to 10,493. The Hang Seng sank 1.9%, or -374 points, to 19,724. The cyclically-sensitive Korean Kospi dropped 1% and India’s Sensex is off 1.7%. In Europe, pretty much the same story, with equities down 0.7% in the aggregate. At home, futures are pointing to a lower open across the major indices. In bondland, we see a slight bid to Treasuries. The 10-year note is rallying 2bps to 3.43%. In the FX market, the US dollar index is flat. On the commodity front, crude oil is down $1.30 to $71.50 a barrel.
